Default What happens when you don't wear boots for ONE day... (Graphic)

I consider myself a very experienced rider, putting down atleast 15,000 miles in a year on my GSXR600. Many of those miles were very close to red line in excess of triple digit speeds or dragging a knee in the twisties practically every other day if the conditions are appropriate. From the day I've owned my motorcycle I've ridden with a full leather suit (A*), boots (A*), gloves (A*), and a AGV or Suomy helmet. (You see the pattern with A*?) In April I went out with my fiancee for a ride to a few dealerships for business and then to go out for a spin through the twisties.

This was the first time I didn't wear boots, for some reason it just didn't occur to me that I didn't put them on and since my fiancee was on the back I always ride carefully and very defensively. This is what happens when you don't wear boots..

A landscaping truck cut me and my fiancee off on the highway and then slammed on the brakes (for what reason we don't know), and he then fled the scene.

Although according to my orthopedic surgeon (close friend) regardless of wearing the boots or not the break would have happened. When my fiancee and I were in the air I pushed her aside so she would come out unscathed, I ended up right in front of the bike at a nice speed of ~45mph. The bike landed on my foot splitting my heel and ankle right in half along with dislocating my entire foot.

Lesson of a lifetime.. WEAR ALL OF YOUR GEAR!

M, You should write up reviews of the gear you were wearing, and how they held up or how they didn't in the review sections!

wow....I wear boots but they aren't really designed with motorcycling in mind...I think that just moved to the top of my list.

was this a recent thing or a while back? A buddy from work told me this morning about a relative of his that had a flatbed pull out in front of him, and he swerved to miss it but caught his foot on the truck. It separated some spongy thing from the bone in his heel, and apparently this tissue doesn't heal, ever, so he has the choice of never being able to walk on it again without severe pain, or amputating and getting a prosthesis that he can actually walk on. Talk about a crappy decision to have to make.

This happened in April, I spent four months on bed rest and pretty much unable to move around.

Right now the fat pad on my heel (same as his) is damaged and on the outside area cut out. I probably will not be able to walk with out some form of foot wear, so far I've been healing extremely well and on my second week of walking with the cane have been able to walk with out it at times with moderate pain.

Then again its also important to know that I have an extremely high pain tolerance, when I was in the ER immediately after the accident I rated the pain as an uncomfortable 4. So maybe I'm 'walking it off' sort of speak.

I'll be writing up articles on all the gear I wore, how it held up, and what damage was incurred at the time of the accident.

Yikes man, glad you're recovering well. You going to get back on a bike next year?
