They suck Jeremy. They feel so unstable, and forget about taking a turn fast!

I'd go with the SV myself. They start cheap and with a few $$$ in mods you can turn it into a crazy looking street fighter, a full faired sport bike, or whatever.

here's an example, a 650 instead of a 1000 but you get the point

You can go the whole range from full naked to full faired, plus you get the wicked sound of a 90° V-twin.

I have an SV650S and love it, but in this case I'm going to recommend that Pun picks up a bigger bike. From what I gather he's not a small dude and if he's planning on ridding 2-up on the thing, the SV650 is not a good choice, an SV1000 may fit the bill as I believe it has a beefier front suspension setup in addition to more power, however if he can control himself, the Busa may be a better / more comfortable way to go.

well, I was thinking the 1000 for him too, I just mentioned the 650 because that's what the picture was.

I plan on getting an SV myself but haven't decided for sure between the 650 and the 1000. I don't need mad power (I'm used to a 40hp supermoto...) but i do plan on carrying a passenger from time to time. I'm not a big guy though, 155lbs, so even with my wife on the bike we combine for under 300. What do you think? I haven't even sat on one before, none of the dealers around here ever have any.

Ask DontTellMom about it. But my opinion would be to go for the 1000 if you have experience riding which you do. you can always open the throttle less, but not more...

I know, I was just trying to help hammer that point home As for your sittuation, I'm about 180 + a girl ~ 120 = about 300, well under the technical max of the bike, however the weak point of the SV650 design has long been touted as the suspension, specifically the front suspension.

The following is from memory, so PLEASE don't quote me: I have an SV650S, which I believe has a slightly beefier setup than the naked version. When riding 2-up at 300 lbs, the suspension is definitely affected and the nose seems to dive substantially (under braking / cornering), to the point where I am slightly uncomfortable. The SV1K has a better suspension setup I believe.

As far as power goes, it depends on the rider. Before I bought the SV, I rode a Gixxer 1000. While the SV handles better in my opinion (due to the better weight distribution of the V-Twin), there is no substitute for the "instant gratification" of the Gixxer. One twist of the throttle in pretty much any gear and you're instantly going as fast as you could possibly want to be. That said, as much as I like my 650S, I would like to have more power. Most of the time I wouldn't use it, but once in a while to get ahead of a problematic cager, ride 2-up, or just satisfy my need for speed, I would like to have the literbike. Hope that helps, feel free to PM / post any other SV questions you may have and I will do my best to answer them. If you're ever in the area and want to take mine for a spin just let me know.

DTM

P.S. Pun post more pics of that chica ASAP!

the SV650 suspension is one of the things I read about. Seems like the swap to GSXR750 forks is pretty common, but I like having the more upright, traditionally mounted bars rather than the clipons, and the GSXR upper triple clamp has no provision for these. An aftermarket clamp exists for something like $400, which I think is a tad on the high side for what it is. I guess I could do the swap (provided I have any problem with the suspension to begin with) and ride it with clip-ons for awhile and see if it really bothers me enough to buy a $400 triple clamp.

I'd love to take one for a spin, but I've never even been to Indiana and don't see a lot of likelihood that I'll be there in the near future. I do have a unit from work that's shipping out to Cambridge City and there's always a chance I could be there for startup around 10/6, but startup trips are so freakin hectic that even if that was near you it would be highly unlikely I'd have a chance to get away.

There's a guy in my neighborhood with a 2000 model SV650, I need to stop by some day and talk to him about it, maybe get to a point where he trusts me taking his bike around the block.
